Couple stops off in Las Cruces during trip from Argentina to Alaska
Las Cruces, April 3rd, 2008

David and Vicky Muralt have some miles on them, to say the least. But that's to be expected of any wandering duo determined to trek from the tip of South America to the end of the road in Alaska.
The Muralts set out Nov. 1, 2007, on the dream journey of a lifetime. This week, 150 days and some 18,000 miles into their travels, they rolled their modified diesel Land Rover across the border in Santa Teresa and spent a couple of days cooling their heels with friends Lia and Peter Krebs in Las Cruces before heading north to Alaska.
All told, the drive from Ushuaia at the southernmost tip of Argentina to Fairbanks will span more than 30,000 miles. That doesn't include side trips to the Galapagos Islands, a stayover to visit family in Cancun or the flight they plan to Switzerland to visit their first grandchild.
They spent a full year preparing the trip and equipping their Land Rover, which now boasts a built-in, double-bed tent, double fuel tanks that can power them along for 1,000 miles, extra spare tires, GPS navigation systems and a 10-gallon water tank that will deliver a drink straight to the passenger side door.
David and Vicky have been married for 35 years. The trek was born of a dream David and Vicky had some 40 years ago."We had our 4 children and we worked hard," he said. "Now we are retired."
The adventure has taken them along the Andes Mountains crossing through Chile, Peru and Ecuador, where they shipped their car to Panama City. From there, it was across Panama and Costa Rica, into Nicaragua and Honduras then on to El Salvador, Guatemala and Belize before cruising through Mexico and into the U.S.
The plan from here, Muralt said, is a leisurely drive through the Rocky Mountains, then to Seattle before crossing into Vancouver, Canada and reaching finally the state of Alaska.
When they get to Fairbanks?
"Well, we'll get drunk, I think," he said.
After that, its an eastward tour of Canada before having the Land Rover shipped back to Argentina for some recuperative time at home in Buenos Aires sometime in August.
